Sri Aurobindo's Relics Shrine(Installed in 1978)
Sri Aurobindo Relics Centre is considered the heart of Sri Aurobindo Srikshetra. The relics center of Sri Aurobindo called "Aspiration" is the living symbol and reigning presence of the Master.
This Meditation Centre is open to the public at fixed times during the day. It is surrounded by a flower and medicinal herbs garden of two acres.
The Ashram takes care of a four-acre flower garden that houses a diverse collection of flower plants and medicinal plants. It also includes a nursery that is used to cultivate 30,000 improved mango grafts and 32,000 improved cashew grafts. Budding and grafting of fruit-bearing and flower plants are done here, along with the maintenance of mango and cashew plant orchards. The Ashram is proud to have over 70 varieties of medicinal plants and takes care of the surroundings that have a wide distribution of rare flora and fauna.
A health center, called 'Rejuvenator' was built in the year 2002, with the financial assistance of the Association 'SAEHANTY' of Italy, to meet the health problems of sadhaks, students, workers, and surrounding tribal villagers. Here the major therapeutic practices like Allopathy, Homeopathy, and Ayurveda are synchronized. A sadhak pharmacist takes care of this centre and devotee doctors come periodically to give free service on weekdays. There are at present outdoor provisions for general check-ups. Now a satellite dental clinic has been opened rendering weekly service on each Friday. SDRF, USA provided a Marshal Jeep for the health center activities in 2003.
We encourage and follow organic methods of agriculture and horticulture through green maturing, compost development, vermicompost, etc. We are applying our years of organic farming experience in rice cultivation, pulses, vegetable, orchid maintenance, apiary, and floriculture to meet the needs of ashramites, visitors, and annual functions.
The wing of the Ashram that deals with vegetable farming is called "Progress". Here we grow all seasonal vegetables and fruits like mango, lychee, jack fruit, lemon, coconut, banana, papaya, drum-sticks, and many more.
Srikshetra cottage industries manufacturers agarbati for consumption at Sri Aurobindo Relics Shrine and also at the department of the Ashram.
We manufacture jhuna (sal-resin)–goggul agarbati for self-use and sale. The surplus sales and profits are utilized for Ashram maintenance. Other agro-products like pickles, spices, and food grains are processed here keeping up quality and purity. Besides the Ashram has a tailoring unit, a rice huller, and a flour mill to serve its requirements.
The community dining hall at the Ashram is managed by the sadhaks. They take care of everything from arranging and cooking to washing the dishes. The food served is vegetarian and wholesome, and is distributed from a table to the sadhaks and visitors standing in a queue at specific hours. Breakfast is served from 7:15-8:00 am, lunch from 12:30-1:30 pm, and dinner from 8:15-9:00 pm. The kitchen normally receives all the food grain, dairy products, vegetables, and fruits grown on the Ashram farm. Purity and sanitation are given much importance. The sadhaks consider the food as Prasad from the Divine Mother and offer it to the inner flame for self-sustenance.
On special Darshan days and festival occasions, free food (Prasad) is offered to the students and visitors.
The general store started in 1977 to sell farm products and also to meet the ashram's needs. Apart from our products, we sell stationaries, clothes, and grocery items, procured from outside to the needs of the surrounding villages and our farm helps. Visitors love to buy our organic products such as rice, dal, honey, ghee, turmeric etc. Find our products.
The few country cows received as donations from the previous owners of the property, were gradually improved by continuous care and cross-breeding. At present, we have 15 cows. We grow improved fodder grass like hybrid nappier and paragrass, to provide minerals and healthy green to the cattle. We prepare and sell sweets and milk products from surplus milk. We utilize cow dung also in running biogas plants.
It is a cashew orchard of 29 acres and here we have developed bee-keeping in 28 boxes. Unfortunately, it is being frequently destroyed by wild elephants as it is very close to the jungle and surrounded by hills.
At the time Sri Aurobindo Srikshetra took shape and was growing, the surrounding areas didn’t have a school for the local populace. The locals engaged their children as cattle herds, baby sitters or the children foraged the forest for food. Survival, not education was their priority. It was exigent that these children be educated. Efforts were made successfully to draw them gradually to formal education through music, balloon flying, picnics, and excursions.
The sadhaks of the Ashram impart free education with co-curricular activities to 250 students from K.G to standard X, in the integral system of education in Sri Aurobindo Purnanga Vidyapitha. Visit School Website.
